When North Hunterdon High School in New Jersey lost a beloved and
valuable member of their community, they decided to commemorate his life and his
impact upon his son and other family members.with a commissioned work. So
Band/Choir Director Vincent Angeline contacted Imagine Music, who in turn
connected North Hunterdon High School to award-winning composer Harry
Bulow. Nine months later, Legacy for
Band was born, a musical composition for band written specifically for
North Hunterdon and with the life of Eric Kavin as the inspiration behind the
music.
Harry Bulow, in reflecting upon this commission, decided to
compose a work that spoke to Kavin's life rather than the fact of his
death. Being a father himself, the composer sought not to dwell on the
darkness of death, but on the influence that the father’s life had on his son
and family. In this sense, the piece speaks to what the father instilled
in his family and community and the more universal and triumphant aspects of
life.
The work consists of a number of sections, each represented by a
certain quality of disposition or personality trait. These are entitled
"Loss and Remembrance", "Confidence", "Faith, Love and Devotion",
"Determination", and "Courage and Character."
This project was a pleasure for everyone involved.
Legacy will be available for
purchase sometime in the summer. North Hunterdon High School plans on premiering
Legacy for Band in the Spring of 2006.
