On North Carolina’s outer banks near Kill Devil Hill and the remote village called Kitty Hawk, a historic flight took place in 1903. This composition attempts to capture the spirit of Wilbur and Orville Wright, as they dreamed of taking flight. The composition begins with a chorale dedicated to the inventive spirit of the Wright brothers, followed by an energetic theme depicting the actual flight. The theme’s climax leads back to a re-statement of the chorale stated more broadly. Kitty Hawk ends with a brief re-statement of the compositional theme suggesting that innovation and creativity never end.
