By Kenneth R. Benoit.  The Five Flags Suite was written as a tribute to the University of West Florida as the university celebrated its 30th anniversary in 1999.  Each of the five movements is inspired by one of the five flags which has flown over the city of Pensacola, where the university is located.  The opening movement, "Spain", is a Spanish march, complete with castanets. The second movement, "England", is a pastorale in the modal style of Ralph Vaughn Williams. "France", the third movement, is musically depicted in a can-can-like scherzo.  The flag of the Confederacy inspired the fourth movement which is a set of variations on the state song of Florida, "Old Folks at Home", also known as "Swannee River" (written by Stephen Foster and first published in 1851). In a nod to Irving Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band", one of the variations is in ragtime.  The suite ends with a march inspired by the American flag and John Philip Sousa.
